Rory McIlroy’s Revealing Reaction to LIV Golf on Netflix’s Full Swing
Rory McIlroy, the number one top-ranking golfer in the world, is one of the most outspoken critics of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.[0] He[1]s featured in Netflix’s new golf documentary series Full Swing and it provides evidence of his opinion of two of those who joined the circuit.[0]
When Rory McIlroy was on the practice range at East Lake Golf Club during the Tour Championship in Atlanta last year, talking about Patrick Reed being disciplined by the PGA Tour for joining the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, McIlroy gave an illuminating response to the ongoing conflict in the sport.[2] He asked when the Dallas Cowboys last made the Super Bowl and when he was told 1996, he responded: “And he dropped spots in the world rankings – beautiful!”[3]
Full Swings inaugural season, consisting of eight episodes, will be available to stream on Netflix starting Wednesday, February 15th at 8am.[4] Rory McIlroy was initially reluctant to take part in the show, but he agreed to feature in the last episode after his position against LIV Golf saw him play a significant part early on in the series.[5] Netflix producer James Mumm told the U.K. Mirror that McIlroy agreed to be involved after being told [1]the golf world needs his voice.[1]
McIlroy explained the ground rules that he set for the producers, saying: “I made sure that the parameters were very much like, look, you can film me–you’re not coming to my house, you’re not coming in my car, you’re not coming anywhere near my family, but you want to do some stuff with me at golf tournaments, totally fine.”[7]
The animosity for the two Masters champions is clearly lingering on Tour, especially with McIlroy, the proverbial leader in the battle against LIV Golf.[1] Despite whatever justification they may have, Rory McIlroy is not happy with them.[8] As long as LIV remains, it is probable that his animosity towards those golfers will endure indefinitely.[8]
