Caddie Collapses on 11th Hole at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Good News Follows
On Friday during the second round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a caddie for an amateur player collapsed on the 11th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links.[0] The caddie, who was looping for amateur player Geoff Couch, was administered CPR on the course before being transported to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for evaluation.[1] The PGA Tour Rules Committee asked pros Beau Hossler and Max McGreevy to resume play, though neither felt comfortable continuing.[2]
On the scene, amateur Lukas Nelson, a singer in rock band Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real, revealed the caddie was “doing better” after receiving medical attention.[3] The incident had shades of the Bills-Bengals game a few weeks ago when Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest on the field after making a tackle and moments later collapsing.[4]
The PGA Tour released a statement on Friday afternoon about the incident.[5] After hearing the news that the caddie was doing better, Higgs said, “It takes a weight off your shoulders.[6] None of us have ever had to deal with that.[4] No one in the NFL had ever had to deal with what happened … so there is no playbook.[4] There is nothing to do.[7] In a way, I was worried that we were still going, but then at the same time it's like, all right, well, soldier on, keep going.[4] I hope he's OK.[4]” The 31-year-old added “Fortunately, we got some good news and kept going. I hope there's more good news in the coming hours and days. Just a very difficult [situation] and kind of a first.[4] Hopefully a last.[4]
